Not sure I've ever seen a body-con dress look stylish before. Let alone a red one! Nonchalant vibe + coat + tousled hair + red lip + sunglasses = major cool points. Dress by Antonio Berardi. Sexy style all JLaw.

I can't help but get completely sucked into any (chic) Christmas advertising that promises a season of roaring log fires, wintery walks, cosy knits and mulled wine. When my Boden catalogue arrived (complete with candy stripe spine) I couldn't help myself from cooing over the styling and telling my boyfriend how clever and beautiful it all was. If only I could live in a catalogue Christmas.

The White Company is another brand it's impossible to resist, especially at this time of year. I want that White Company life where my family is enormous and we all wear matching cashmere and sit around in huge houses grinning at each other.

Christmas in the Cotswolds may be nothing like The Holiday, but let's imagine owning Cameron Diaz's vast coat wardrobe and meeting Jude Law in the cosy local pub. Maybe a few cheeky pre-holiday purchases will help create a fantasy Christmas we can all enjoy...

The sudden switch to cold weather means it's time to rethink your beauty regime: say hello to hydrating products, autumnal scents and a few fun seasonal additions. Here are some of my current favourites.

Ren Vita Mineral Omega 3 Optimum Skin Oil

I've been using this for years (it used to be called Omega 3 Night Repair Serum and cost £11 more for 20ml more product...) and find that whatever my skincare concern, be it spots or dryness, this always improves it by morning. Some complain about the smell but I love it (and I'm fussy). A winter must-have.

Argentum Apothacary La Potion Infinie*

Hugely expensive, hugely luxe. Silver hydrosol makes this skin-saver antibacterial and calming. I find its light texture works perfectly over face oils to provide an extra layer of moisture. Smells divine (and all natural: citrus, rosewood, geranium, sandalwood and patchouli). Pricey but multi-purpose and can even be used around eyes.

Emma Hardie Amazing Face Moringa Cleansing Balm

Another old favourite and still my number one cleanser. Makes every face wash into a mini facial. I am trying to get to grips with facial massage and I like to use this in the evenings to take off my makeup and give my skin a good going over. A pot lasts forever so the cost is only slightly upsetting.

Jo Malone Blackberry and Bay Cologne

Oh how I wish I could do a trolly dash in this store. I love to buy Jo Malone gifts for others and was lucky enough to receive this myself on my 30th birthday. Perfect for this time of year, it's fruity, spicy, sophisticated and a bit unusual.

Nars Red Lizard

I think I've only been brave enough to wear this once or twice but the colour is fabulous. Nothing looks better than a red lip at Christmas and this dark, matte shade works well on those with yellow or neutral-toned skin. You'll need to apply a few layers and blot in between for maximum staying power.

Aveeno Moisturising Creamy Oil

This lotion doesn't actually feel oily but gets its smell from almond oil and sinks into skin quickly. I like the pump dispenser and the fact it contains colloidal oatmeal, which is both calming and nourishing.

Rimmel London Lash Accelerator Endless Mascara

I got this free when I bought two other Rimmel products but to my amazement I really rate it. The brush allows very precise application and separates lashes easily. The effect is natural but buildable. Probably my favourite drugstore mascara in recent years and it costs £8.

Back in August we visited somewhere I'd been wanting to go to since seeing it on Gardeners' World (Friday night TV guilty pleasure alert). Trebah Gardens in Falmouth are sub-tropical gardens set in a beautiful valley that rolls right down to the Helford River. You can pootle down the various paths before hopping up some steps and onto a pebble beach with beautiful views and an ice cream shop.

August is the best time of year to see the incredible Hydrangea Valley, which was the main reason I wanted to visit. Hydrangeas are one of my favourite flowers and the valley was even better in person than it looks in these photos. The whole garden is a joy to walk round with a diverse selection of trees and plants and I can imagine it must look incredible in autumn too. There's also plenty of fun elements to entertain children, including a zip swing (which I may have had a go on.) If you're in the area, I recommend it.

I have a very clear memory of me, probably around 18 years old, sat on a train wearing full-on Boots Soltan factor 30 in the middle of winter because I had read that year-round sunscreen was the key to eternal youth. It felt so thick and clogging, and I already suffered from spots – no way was this going to last. My good intentions fell away, largely because I didn't like wearing the stuff on my skin.

At 31, it's a lot easier to remain motivated about application because the tell-tale signs of sun damage are already showing in the form of pigmentation. I've been testing Murad Essential-C Day Moisture SPF 30* since the spring and can report that its sophisticated formula has cured my aversion to SPF.

Murad believe that SPF can only ever provide 97 per cent protection against UV rays. Their MuraSol™ Antioxidant Defense technology is intended to close this gap via a blend of encapsulated antioxidants that create a barrier of free radical neutralisers to halt UV damage. Alongside 'next generation' Vitamin C, I found these skin-boosting benefits helped encourage daily application. The light cream sinks in quickly, hydrating skin and leaving no white cast. Although I might look a bit shiny for a few minutes, makeup applies easily (with no bobbling!) and the overall effect is juicy skin = happy Laura.

If you're in the market for a moisturiser that offers broad spectrum protection and which you won't seek to avoid wearing whenever possible, I highly recommend it. Murad also offer an excellent returns policy, where they will refund the cost of products which you feel don't suit your skin (see murad.co.uk.)

There's no bun in my oven (just toast and biscuits) but I do have a good excuse for some sneaky shopping: my boyfriend's brother and sister-in-law just had a beautiful baby girl. We're off to welcome the new arrival this weekend and, of course, a suitable gift was required. A perfectly-timed email advertising 30 per cent off and a brief perusal of the website had me hitting the order button, pronto.

Semihandmade doors on IKEA cabinets via Smitten Studio

Nineteen months ago we moved into our lovely little Victorian house; our heads full of ideas for how we would improve it. Nineteen months on, the reality it quite different. We have ripped out a cupboard and replaced the boiler (expensive and dull), had a fireplace made and half decorated the living room (we didn't remove the radiator as we want to replace it, same with the windows). And that's about it. The reality of refurbishing a house is that tasks need to be completed in a certain order and there's only so much you can do to a place before the money you have spent on it cannot be recouped on selling, let alone a profit made. We have really struggled to make decisions regarding what to change and what we can live with versus what is 'not worth doing'. As a perfectionist, this has been particularly difficult for me!

Two rooms we always knew required more major work are the bathroom and kitchen. We were gearing up to replace the bathroom, when the kitchen started deconstructing itself. Tiles fell off the walls, shelves collapsed and drawers fell off. Apparently the kitchen would be first. 165 Pinterest 'pins', multiple showroom visits, two trips to IKEA and many, many hours of research later we are nearly ready to start.

I always had in mind we might use IKEA cabinets with custom, painted MDF fronts. However, after our first trip to IKEA to inspect the new Metod kitchen range, I was not impressed. Instead, we visited all the 'big box' kitchen showrooms and got prices from local small businesses. After a £7000+ quote from a local kitchen maker, and a £4000 estimate for the Cooke & Lewis 'Carisbrooke' taupe kitchen (B&Q) that we quite liked, we decided to rethink. The thing about low- to mid-range kitchens is that they are all basically the same: particle board carcasses with foil-wrapped (melamine) cabinet fronts. I personally do not like melamine and its shiny finish and always had my heart set on painted doors (with dreams of a 'Plain English' kitchen on a budget). Back to IKEA we went. Having compared the interiors of many more kitchens I now thought their cabinets were fine for our purposes. The low prices, plus all parts being easily replaceable and the added bonus of so many organisational nicknacks sealed the deal.

Our kitchen is quite small: we are changing from a u-shape to a galley, putting French doors in leading to the garden, bricking up one doorway and moving another. There is also ongoing debate about taking the floor level down to match the adjoining room. By saving money on cabinets, we're able to complete this other work. We're not hiring a builder either. Instead, my electrician brother, my boyfriend and I will attempt to carry out the project with just the help of task-specific tradesmen such as bricklayers and carpenters. I have started clearing out the kitchen and we are setting up a temporary one in the dining room. Luckily, we also have a large under-stair cupboard where we can house our washing machine and tumbledryer. I will have the new dishwasher and fridge freezer we've bought set up in the dining room along with a microwave, toaster and kettle. Deluxe!

I intend to blog about the refurb process, so I hope you won't mind this type of 'interiors' content. Wish me luck and please cross your fingers that I have a new kitchen by around August/September. Here's some of my ideas and my Pinterest inspiration to keep you going until the before and afters! Please let me know if you have any tips for surviving a kitchen renovation.

I used to consider toner a waste of time; an unnecessary extra step in my skincare routine. However, I'm now 31, my skin is dehydrated and I can definitely feel the benefit of an additional layer of moisture. I love the feel of applying toner with a cotton pad but for ease of use and less wastage a spray bottle is best. Applied after cleansing I find I need a lot less of any subsequent products such as serum, oil or moisturiser.

I have been using all three of these toners and recommend them highly. You can always decant your favourite toner into a Muji spray bottle — perfect for cooling skin on hot days. I've also heard that the Clinique Moisture Surge is ideal for adding a touch of dewiness to an overly matt or powdered face.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02231470628952474264noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2631278733907849430.post-54976850412273667882014-04-24T12:30:00.000+01:002014-06-25T22:31:36.400+01:00Fashion: The Cobalt Blues

Thus far in 2014 I've bought only four items of clothing/pairs of shoes. Maybe this sounds like plenty to you, or perhaps it sounds like shopping starvation. For me, it feels like the latter but I've had to be frugal.

Cobalt blue is my favourite colour at the moment. I couldn't resist buying these sandals and pencil skirt and intend to wear them together with a white or grey t-shirt this summer. A flash of red would look good with this shade too. Shorter length pencil skirts (on or above the knee) work well for lots of occasions, especially dressed down with a t-shirt. The skirt is sold out online but there were lots in my local store when I bought this. Strangely, all size 10. What's your favourite colour for summer?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02231470628952474264noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2631278733907849430.post-62695179719264445922014-04-23T11:13:00.000+01:002014-04-23T11:13:16.539+01:00Guest Post on Pai Skincare
I'd had my eye on these giant White Company cushions for ages and finally bit the bullet during the January sale. £50 for two cushion covers and two feather inners isn't bad. They are muted grey/taupe cotton velvet on one side, with linen on the back. I bought them to add a bit of luxury and texture to our bedroom. Have you ever noticed how many different layers of linen and quilts and cushions are used to create the abundant, cosy feel in stylised bedroom images? I'm working on it! The latest versions are a slightly different colour but just as pretty. You can find them here. Mine are the 65x65 cm size.

I have long been aware of Falke as the brand the fashion girls wear. We've all read those features: 'It's chilly so I broke out my fresh stack of Falke/Wolford tights. They're pricy but worth the money!' Besides getting distracted at the idea of buying a 'stack' of £20+ tights at the beginning of each winter, I have always wondered if they really were a worthy investment. Time to find out!

First impressions were good as I opened the packaging, although the tights looked a little long in the leg. (I'm 5'7" and ordered the M/L but I am definitely comprised of more 'body' than 'leg'.) I compared them to a pair of M&S opaques and they were significantly longer. However, once on they felt almost perfect. Perhaps still a fraction long but no bunching at the crotch or ankle. In fact they looked so sleek and snug I ran around in just my bra for a while and was even tempted to snap a picture for you. Very soft, very comfy and not in the least bit shiny. This is key! I am often horrified at the amount of sheen reflected off an otherwise smart pair of opaques. Not a problem with my new Pure Matts. They were also perfectly black and not remotely see-through. I wore the tights all day on a trip to London and late into the evening. They never rode down, snagged or sagged. And, luckily for me (judging by the pics of my shockingly short dress*), they do not have a 'brief' section of reinforced fabric that shows once your skirt rides up.

I washed the tights in with my woollens on a cold wash and air dried them. On inspection, the tights have developed some fluffy felt-like patches under where my feet go, perhaps from my boots rubbing on them. The rest of the material is still in good shape. I like the fact they have a proper label in the back of the tights so that I know which way round to put them on. And more importantly, to aid if I'm in a hurry and want to grab my 'posh' tights from the tangled mass in my undies drawer.

At £22.95 they are expensive for a pair of opaque tights, but for the quality, comfort and longevity I anticipate them offering, I would definitely buy them myself. I have read that the navy blue pair are the perfect shade; bloody impossible to find on the high street. I'd also like to try Falke's wool offerings as I usually find wool tights impossibly itchy! Are you tempted to invest in some posh tights? Where do you buy your opaques?

A friend of mine insists she moisturises her entire body every day. Clearly her bedroom is a lot warmer than mine and/or her shower doesn't make a sound similar to an elastic band flicking when it is about to initiate a minute-long cold water torture session. During winter, my shivering limbs are much more likely to see an application of sheepskin slippers and cashmere joggers than body lotion. Here are a couple of products to soothe weather-chapped skin with minimum effort and no après-shower naked time necessary.

Nivea In-shower Body Moisturiser

Lazy-person lifesaver! You apply this cream after your soap or shower gel and then rinse off. It takes seconds and leaves a nourishing film of almond oil that means you can forgo that chilly moisturiser application. Cheap as chips too.

Suti Rejuvenate Organic Face Oil*
Citrus-smelling heavenly syrup to nourish and rejuvenate dehydrated winter skin and sooth away post-blemish marks and scars. Apply alone in the evening or under moisturiser in the morning.

I'm not sure if this is a 'celebrity' thing, an American thing or just a weird... thing. Kourtney Kardashian's baby girl Penelope is wearing a triangle bikini. Baby girl nips are no different than baby boy nips and do not necessitate covering merely because of their potential to eventually become breasts. Is this because those are Kardashian baby girl nips and therefore 'famous' nips? Are they being guarded to preserve the fee for their first appearance in Hello! magazine? Or is this about paedophiles? In my mind, to cover something implies there is something to cover and therefore adds an element of sexualisation where there was none.

Perhaps it's just a fashion choice; Kourtney dressing her daughter like herself. In Europe half the adult women don't bother with bikini tops on the beach and babies and little girls commonly wear nappies, nothing, bikini bottoms, swimsuits or those funny little sun protection outfits.

Please tell me your thoughts on baby bikinis. Am I the only one who finds them strange and creepy?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02231470628952474264noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2631278733907849430.post-42719254975042126312013-11-27T19:38:00.000+00:002013-11-27T20:00:57.163+00:00Pai Moisturisers - Repackaged and Resized

It's not often that a brand listens to the feedback of its customers and actually makes a tangible effort to remedy issues. However, British skincare brand, Pai, has done just this.

If you read my review of their Chamomile and Rosehip Calming Day Cream* you'll remember the only black mark against the product was the frustrating bottle that wouldn't relinquish its contents.

Thankfully for my newly-crisped winter skin, Pai contacted me to share the news that they have repackaged all of their moisturisers in frosted glass containers with airless pumps and increased the sizes from 30 ml to 50 ml. They are also fully recyclable.

The result is altogether more weighty and luxe, and the new design means the precious ingredients are protected from degrading. I'm impressed with Pai for listening to what their customers want. If you appreciate quality British-made products from an independent company using superior ingredients and clear labelling, I suggest you check them out.

The new style moisturisers are available on paiskincare.com and cost £32. (Previously £24 for 30ml.)
Forget the season of good will; Christmas is a divider. Most people either love it or hate it. I don't advocate decorating the house on November 1st, buying 'hilarious' Christmas jumpers and spray-snowing your windows, but a few subtly seasonal purchases can help set the mood for winter. Anything that perks up six months of cold weather is a bonus in my book. With this in mind, I've put together a bit of wintery inspiration for those who feel the festive spirit but fear the associated onslaught of tat. From the perfect Mac Lady Danger dupe to a stripy dish for your christmas crisps.

After a spectacularly hot summer in the UK, plus two weeks in Spain for weddings in Ibiza and Barcelona, I've had the opportunity to road test a selection of sun-related products. Read on for the good, the bad and the greasy...

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Invisible Nutritive Oil SPF50+
Sun oils have never been on my radar due to the fact they usually offer, at best, SPF 6, and, for me, that equates to around six minutes in the sun without burning. This product offers a high SPF and is a good option for those who like oil-based sunscreen. I used it in full Ibiza sun for a couple of hours at a time and didn't burn.

I took this on holiday to trial but intended to use Piz Buin 1 Day Long as my main sunscreen. However, I had a reaction to it and came out in a rash (apparently this is common: if you google it, a lot of people have had issues.) So I switched to the La Roche-Posay but didn't have much success with this either. I found the mineral-oil heavy formula very greasy and difficult to tolerate. It was impossible to wash off my hands after rubbing it in and it left my body so oily I was like a piece of fly paper on the beach, with sand stuck all over me! Using it by the pool was a lot more successful but I still disliked the formulation, the feel and the thought of my body in the heat covered with impermeable mineral oil.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF50+ Fluide Extreme
This is an old favourite of mine; a very reliable, hard-working product that I use on my face most summers. It doesn't have any artificial fragrance added, which is good and bad. Good for those with sensitive skin but I do find the chemical smell a little off-putting. However, it quickly fades on application. Not too shiny and provides a good base for makeup or worn alone during holidays. Doesn't break me out – just make sure you double cleanse with a balm in the evening to remove it.

Bioderma Photoderm Après-soleil Face and Body
This fruity-smelling cream provided much-needed moisture after sunbathing and took the edge off any over-cooked areas of skin. Again, I was put off by mineral oil as a key ingredient, as I wanted my skin to be able to breathe after being covered in sun cream all day. I didn't use it on my face.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL SPF50+ Melt-in Cream
My first time trying this tinted version of another La Roche-Posay gem and I was intrigued by the concept of SPF plus colour. I found the formula to be more akin to foundation than the sheer tint I had envisaged. It was a little dark for my skin and I felt that I wasn't able to get a natural look with it while also using enough product for it to act as sunscreen. Instead I had to first apply sunscreen and then use a little of this to add colour and provide light coverage. I don't understand how this could be rubbed all over the face without ending up with foundation-like product clogged in hair and eyebrows. Unfortunately not a concept that worked for me.

Suncream choice is a very subjective issue so please test these products out yourself to see if you like them. I'm enjoying the intermittent Indian summer we've been having and find myself craving a few more days in the sun.

What are you favourite SPF products?Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02231470628952474264noreply@blogger.com103tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2631278733907849430.post-36992274927046418422013-03-16T16:34:00.001+00:002013-04-04T21:50:53.637+01:00Diptyque Philosykos Eau de Parfum

When I lived within walking distance of Space NK I used to pop in all the time and have a little spray of Philosykos and sniff all the candles. The staff probably thought I was a shoplifter with excellent taste.

This heady fig scent grew on me gradually until I fell completely in love with it. I conducted a little test to see how the eau de toilette compared to the eau de parfum and there was no contest in terms of longevity. I baulked at the price of the parfum though, only available in the hefty 100 ml bottle. Luckily after my mother point-blank refused to spend that much on perfume, my lovely boyfriend bought it for me for Christmas instead.

I'm a real sucker for beautiful packaging but I don't usually allow myself to hang on to empty cardboard and suchlike; that's how one ends up on Channel 4 programmes about hoarders. However, when it comes to Diptyque I cannot help but squirrel away the pretty boxes. If you buy one of their eye-wateringly expensive scented candles, the packaging retains the smell and does a pretty good job of adding perfume to a room by itself.

My perfume came with a lovely cotton pouch and gift box – both of which I will find a use for. If you love fig scents you have to try Philosykos. It's deep, fruity and addictive. I can't wait for summer when it will really sing.

I'm having one of those days that gets off to a bad start and never quite recovers itself (although the sun did just come out!). As a diversionary tactic I thought I'd post some pictures from our trip to Crete last October. We traveled all over the island and stayed in lots of different accommodation. These were some of the highlights:

The ramshackle bars and restaurants that wind around the cliffs to the edge of the bay at Matala.

Rethymno old town. Particularly the restaurant Castelvecchio. Charming waiters and delicious food.

Chania's Venetian harbour. Beautiful architecture and perfect people-watching bars.

Casa Delfino in Chania. We spent one night in this chic hotel on a lucky last-minute room rate. Kirsten Dunst and Vigo Mortensen shot a scene for a movie in the alleyway beneath our balcony!

The pool at the Rimondi Grand. Total peace, lovely views and cocktails delivered to our sun beds.

The incredible drive through the mountainous interior of the island to Paleohora.

This year we have two weddings to attend in Ibiza and Barcelona so we're making it into a holiday and flying from one to the other. Please tell me I'm not the only one already dreaming of summer! Where do you hope to go this year?
It's the same old story every winter – I'm always looking for a simple, soothing moisturiser to stop my skin from dehydrating. This year I've been using Pai Chamomile & Rosehip Sensitive Skin Cream to see if it's up to the job.

Pai is a UK company with an ethos of transparency. They use only 'clean' ingredients and list every component in their formulas in plain English rather than chemical formulas designed to baffle us. All products are certified organic by the Soil Association.

This moisturiser has a very mild, fresh scent that I'm struggling to describe – a bit like a refined Twinings herbal tea. Lovely, elegant and relaxing.

The texture is that of a water-based cream. It's not oily but spreads easily across skin and sinks in beautifully. I'm prone to spots and dehydration and my skin can easily feel parched. This moisturiser packs a double punch with chamomile providing matricine and azulene; and rosehip – full of omegas and antioxidants. On days where my skin is doubly dry I layer over a facial oil or mix some with it. It leaves my skin ready for makeup and hasn't made me break out.

The only thing I've not liked about it is the bottle. It's glass with a pump dispenser and I found it stopped working when the bottle was still half full. I've had to take the lid off and wiggle the tube around inside every time I use it. The bottle opening is too small for my finger so I'm left pining for the last few applications of product. I'd like a tube that's double the size.

I was determined to be a smart sale shopper this year; buying only items I had eyed at full price and not being led astray by random bits and bobs I didn't need. I also signed up to a million e-newsletters to ensure I knew when all the sales were starting. Fail to prepare? Prepare to fail!

For some reason my bath phobia has lifted (maybe because my new house has a big bathroom with a window and doesn't feel claustrophobic) and I really wanted some relaxing aromatherapy bath oils.

This gorgeous set of minis by Aromatherapy Associates had eluded me for too long! I finally found it for half price on the Aromatherapy Associates website when they went into a rather late and unpromoted sale. So far I've only tried the 'Relax Deep' oil but I figure this set should last me until next Christmas. It's also the perfect way to test all of the different scents in the range.

While shopping their sale I also bought a 'Relax' candle which has a low-key, sophisticated spicy smell. The key oils used are West Indian bay, Geranium and Myrrh. It uses natural wax and produces no soot.

I'd wanted this Reiss 'Cate' top for months but didn't want to pay £80+ for it. The shape and style are similar to a sweatshirt but the material is a woven knit. It's already proving to be a *Trinny Woodall voice* key piece.

The necklace was for sale at 75 per cent off in Accessorize. It's tiptoeing into the tacky bracket but I like to wear it over plain crew neck jumpers and t-shirts to add a bit of colour and sparkle.

What bargains did you snag in the sales?

First off a little thanks to the three readers I probably have left. High five! Let's go bowling some time. Hopefully all three of you will forgive the lack of posts since *whisper it* July. You may also have noticed that we've changed; we've widened. Not only me but the blog too. I managed to alter the column widths all by myself, which is something I'd wanted to do for a long time so that I could ditch the crappy Blogger template and have bigger photos. Cue a warm glow of achievement that lasted three to five days and I'm not even joking.

More new stuff: I've moved house. After a tense couple of months waiting to see if the sale would come off, we moved J out of his old (sold) house and the both of us into our new place at the end of September. And promptly went on holiday for a fortnight. The house is a little red brick Victorian semi built in 1890. It has huge, single glazed windows, three fireplaces and is freezing when the heating's off but we love it and couldn't be happier.

I can't wait to shape our new home. At the moment we have no furniture at all in the living room save for two beanbags. The dining room has a table and two non-matching chairs that I don't even like. This is where I ask if you're interested in interior decor and house-related posts... Please report in below. Chances are you're going to get them whatever you say but, hey, it's nice to be heard (and ignored), right?

I'm going to come right out and tell you that I set this picture up like a little prop stylist to showcase my new John Lewis 'Logan' sheets and pillows in blue. The blanket is an eBay buy that required months of searching (and no-one understands my obsession with it). I had to find one after seeing this post on The Marion House Book.

I'm in love with this fireplace in our master bedroom. We have these cherry red tiles in the dining room in front of the main fireplace too. It makes a nice little spot to burn some scented candles...
I treated myself to this Jo Malone Wild Fig & Cassis candle at the airport when we were flying to Crete. I've never had an expensive scented candle before and it's delicious. The scent is a unique take on fig but having smelt similar (but not as rich) scents in cheaper candles I wish I'd gone for a more unusual fragrance. If they'd had the gorgeous new Blackberry & Bay candle I probably would've got that, but it had sold out. You can appreciate the quality of this candle even when it's not lit as the smell carries. It's also made of soy wax, which unlike paraffin, does not release cancer-causing carcinogenic chemicals when burned.

Another cheaper alternative for fig lovers is this Geodesis Fig Tree candle, available at John Lewis. More of a straight-forward fig scent this still has masses of 'throw' and scents the room beautifully. It is, however, made of a mineral/vegetable 'blend' which I didn't realise until after I'd bought it.

I'm on the look out for some wooden bedside tables: if anyone has any recommendations I'd love to read them.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02231470628952474264noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2631278733907849430.post-89198262620747920792012-11-09T15:53:00.000+00:002012-11-09T22:45:41.062+00:00Whole Foods Market, Cheltenham
Last Sunday I was lucky enough to pop to Cheltenham to preview the new Whole Foods Market before its opening. Along with H&M (opening 2013), this ranks as a significant event in the Gloucestershire social calendar.

A group of us were given a tour around the new shop and invited to sample lots of delicious food and drink. The Whole Foods ethos is to offer high-quality, natural food, beauty and health products. More than 330 of the products available are locally sourced from within the county as well.

The staff working on the different counters are all experts in their fields and able to offer advice on cuts of meat, recipe ideas, types of spices etc. It's far removed from a standard supermarket experience – you're expected to try before you buy and the selection is huge. It's a bit like having an old fashioned butcher, baker, fishmonger etc all under one roof, except there's also a pick of gourmet treats from abroad as well so you get the best of both worlds.

If cooking's not your thing, they have stalls offering freshly made meals of all different types (and what I sampled was very tasty). They can even cater for dinner parties given the appropriate notice period. (You could totally order everything from Whole Foods and then pretend you slaved for hours in the kitchen... But that would be wrong.)

There's also a huge selection of natural and organic makeup, beauty and health products which I cannot wait to have a proper look through. If you're feeling brave you can have your face scanned by a machine that evaluates the condition of your skin, sun damage levels etc. The beauty staff are then able to provide product suggestions to counter any negative findings. You can even go back for a rescan to see how the products are performing.

I'm really pleased this Austin-born brand has opened shop in Cheltenham and support their mission and values (more info here). I'm almost sorry I live half an hour away or I would be there several times per week. At least I won't go broke grinding my own pecan butter, buying fresh coffee and eating pots of olives and wheels of cheese.

The Cheltenham Whole Foods Market is situated at Gallagher Retail Park.

sofarsochic
I don't think I've done one of these posts before, probably because my skin is pretty variable and I wouldn't want to claim any 'expert' knowledge. However, my current routine has been in place for a few months now and is really working for me, so I thought I would share... *

Morning Routine
I wash my face with Perricone MD Nutritive Cleanser. I generally avoid foaming cleansers (and it does contain sodium laureth sulfate) but this one has enough clever and benefitial ingredients to tempt me and I don't find it drying. It's very gentle and has a soft baby powder smell. The key goodies are alpha lipoic acid – an antioxidant said to protect skin cells and refine skin texture – and DMAE – said to diminish the appearance of fine lines. It's also quick to use.

A few mornings a week I use Alpha-H Micro Cleanse. Totally addicted to this stuff. You may remember the Alpha-H facial I had last summer. Well, the therapist, Jodie, used this on me and it was incred(ible). I'm not usually a fan of physical exfoliators but the micro-beads in this allow you to manipulate the product while the 12 per cent glycolic acid does its stuff! Probably not one for sensitive skin, however.

I then apply Perricone MD Advanced Face Firming Activator. This features the same two key ingredients as the Cleanser and also sodium hyaluronate to help skin retain water. I have really noticed the difference since I started using this product. I have had far fewer spots and my skin has looked more radiant. Slightly odd fishy smell but hey, I can live with that. The smell fades immediately upon application.

As it's so warm at the moment I'm finding my skin doesn't need as much moisturising. I have a sample of REN Hydra-Calm Global Protection Day Cream from Red Magazine and have been so impressed with it that I've ordered the full size. So I might use a little of this or go straight onto SPF...

Still on the search for the holy grail 'wear it everyday and it's almost a pleasure' sunscreen I bought Shiseido Urban Environment UV Protection Cream Plus SPF 50. It's not broken me out and my face hasn't burned but it has coloured and gone freckly. I prefer to try to keep my face as pale as possible while being totally slack on the rest of my sun protection. Okay I don't actually 'prefer' to be slack on the rest but let's just say the face is the priority, okay? I'm also not keen on the suncreeny smell and it makes me mega shiny when I don't have remotely greasy skin. Would not repurchase (but it's not, not working, so it's in the regime still, plus it was expensive so I'm not getting rid).
Evening Routine
First up is Suti Cleanse Organic Balm Facial Cleanser (which I reviewed here). Still loving this as much as ever and have just ordered a new pot. I massage this in without wetting my face and then remove with a muslin cloth. I feel confident that this takes off all of my makeup but if I've been wearing sunscreen or am feeling particularly goodie goodie I will either double cleanse with this or do a second cleanse with the Nutritive Cleanser mentioned earlier.

I remove my eye makeup with Bioderma Crealine H2O, which is gentle and no-fuss. I got mine in Paris but think you can now buy in the UK.

The Suti Cleanser leaves my skin feeling nourished enough to forgo moisturiser most nights but hey, I'm a beauty addict and can't resist adding in a little facial oil for night time treatment benefits. I am currently using Suti Rejuvenate Face Oil, which is delicious. It smells amazing and contains a host of skin-saving ingredients such as evening primrose oil, frankincense, rosehip seed oil and argan oil. This has helped to accelerate the healing of spots and fade old scars. I like using an oil in the evening as it feels pampering and luxurious as well.

Added Extras
To tackle individual spots (not that I have many using this routine) I use (MALIN+GOETZ) Acne Treatment. This stuff contains sulfur, salicylic acid, camphor and zinc to calm spots and send them packing. You apply with a cotton bud and it leaves white splodges all over your face. My boyfriend loves me in this! Ha. I am shameless.

I'm also taking two of the Well, Well, Well Krill Oil Supplements daily. As I take a lot of harsh medication for my RA, plus I'm vegetarian (although I eat fish) I think these are probably a very positive addition for me. It's only been a couple of weeks so far but my skin is clear and I feel like these will help me to keep it that way. They smell fishy but you can't taste anything. Avoid if you have an allergy to shellfish.

The Price of Beauty
Jeez that seems like a lot of writing about what I use on my face. I've ordered some Alpha-H Liquid Gold to add into my night time routine a few nights a week in place of the Micro Cleanse in the morning (it has run out). I'm also thinking I should probably use a toner after cleansing and actually apply one of the five eye creams I have kicking about. I'm not getting any younger!

I've come to realise that where my skin is concerned, I am willing to pay for products that work. I'm not blessed with perfect skin so what's the point in throwing cash at nice clothes and meals out but skimping on my face when that's the one thing that gives me the confidence to face the day? I hope this was vaguely interesting/helpful. Leave me a comment if you have any product raves or questions!
Over the past month I have suffered a series of tech woes. First my iPhone broke, meaning (amongst other things, such as 'do my job') I could take no photos. Then, the day before I got my phone replacement, my MacBook broke. Apple took over a week to fix it, messed me around endlessly, charged me £200 for the privilege and then tried to give me the computer back with a brand new HOLE they'd created during the repair. *calm thoughts, happy thoughts* Once happily reunited with my precious laptop, my charger broke, meaning I couldn't charge the thing. Hence the lack of blogging. But I'm back now and shall continue undeterred. Despite my Apple anger I'm considering the hugely expensive and beautiful MacBook Pro Retina Display – I cannot afford it but I wants it. Anyone got one? In breaking, my mac has shown its first sign of weakness and I'm not sure I can trust it anymore. Should I give the relationship another go or will it never be the same?
